Undoubtedly, Netflix has been the king of online streaming for years, but somehow, Disney+ has made an enormous splash in the market in a brief span. When Netflix was launched, it faced a massive amount of competition from established names like Amazon, Now TV, HBO, Hulu, and Apple TV+ but surprisingly, it paved its way to the top. However, now the scenario is quite different, with Disney+ joining hands with others like ESPN and Hulu is giving a tough time to Netflix. Most people are not aware that until 2019, Disney actually worked with Netflix and gave the company a license to stream plenty of its movies online, including the whole of the Marvel series, which is still available for streaming on the platform.
As time passed and Disney emerged, the masterminds behind the platform have been hoping that their classic family-friendly content will soon take over Netflix. One cannot deny that Netflix has more original TV shows and series in terms of content, but considering the time frame, Disney might soon bring a dent in its subscribers. Though the debate can be never-ending as to which one is better, below are some points that will help you chose the better one for you-
Price
When it comes to the pricing category, both platforms provide you with three packages and download services.
Netflix has plan offers like –
- Basic: $8.99/month in SD quality with one screen and one download
- Standard: $13.99/month in HD quality with two screens and two downloads
- Premium: $17.99/month in Ultra HD quality with four screens and four downloads
Whereas, Disney+ offers plans like –
- Disney+: $7.99/month or $79.99/year
- The Disney Bundle: $13.99/month inclusive of Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu with ads
- The Disney Bundle: $19.99/month inclusive of Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu without ads
Other than the pricing difference, Disney+ offers downloads on different devices. Moreover, it allows you to stream on four devices simultaneously and a total of seven devices using the same account. Consequent to Netflix, Disney+ allows you to watch everything in HD (some even support 4K UHD). Interestingly, Netflix has stopped the access to a free trial period in several regions.
Content
One of the most important considerations is the content of the streaming platform. Disney+ does have a lower price range than Netflix, and Netflix does have a wider availability all over the world than Disney+, but in the end, it all depends on what you want to watch. If you have kids in your house, you must opt-in for Disney+ as it has content from Disney Studios, Marvel Studios, Star Wars, and National Geographic Divisions. Amongst its thousands of movies and TV series to stream, it also has a few of them purchased from the 20th Century Fox. Similar to Netflix, it also has a few original contents like The Mandalorian and Wanda Vision. Another exciting fact is that Pixar and The Simpsons have also become a part of the House of Mouse.
Contrary to the above, Netflix has a broader choice and a vast library of content, which keeps on growing almost daily. From the longest awaited, The Irishman, The Witcher, Extraction, The Queen’s Gambit, Bridgeton, Netflix has got you; all covered. To keep people entertained and stick to the brand, Netflix also came forward with older originals like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Russian Doll, and much more.
Availability
This category will entirely be an unfair one to compare as Netflix came long back in the field and has spread its streaming services to over 190 countries and territories. However, we have still considered adding this as even after a late start in the market, Disney+ has made massive launches in the US, Canada, Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. It also made its name in the European territory, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, and India, in March 2020.
As time passed, Disney+ went on to cover various other regions and countries. Consequently, Netflix is not available in just four countries – China, North Korea, Crimea, and Syria.
