Jumping on the bed, throwing pillows across the room and munching candy past midnight. That spells my childhood, aaand a set of sleep-deprived parents living in the room next door. Pillow fights were always a favorite for me and my siblings, how much safer could my parents have possibly wanted us to be? Now although pillow fights seem like something restricted to your younger years, the truth is that they’re not at all. Here’s why.

Pillow Fighting Throughout History

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details, let’s take a look at history. No, not the history of the world – that’ll take too long – the history of pillow fighting. Yep, there is actually a section in history books dedicated to this subject (your teacher definitely skipped it). International Pillow Fight Day

In modern times, pillow fighting has taken a softer and gentler direction. Every year on April 7th, over 20 cities around the world brace themselves for International Pillow Fight Day. My, how far we’ve come. People get together to fight it out with their pillows. I’m talking about cities like Vancouver, New York, Melbourne and Barcelona… and those are only a few. Is this perhaps the way towards world peace?

With Great Fun Comes Great Responsibility

Now doesn’t this event sound like something we could all get on board with? Of course there are some rules you’d need to know beforehand, but they’re pretty straightforward. There’s no grabbing of other participants’ pillows, there’s no hitting ‘too hard’, and everyone who participates must help clean up after the event comes to a close – after all there will be quite a number of feathers to fetch.
