Not all of us can settle for vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry flavored ice cream. Some of us have very particular (or peculiar) tastes, which can only be satisfied by the most outlandish ice cream experiments out there.
Let’s investigate some of the most original (and sometimes extreme) ice cream selections. You might just find a new favorite!
We begin this list with a relatively tame flavor which most people will enjoy: banana curry. To start things off, we need to make the banana curry, which is done so by oven baking some bananas with plenty of sugar for forty minutes. We then scoop the syrupy bananas into a blender, along with lemon juice, salt, curry powder, and vanilla. Finally, chill the mixture for around four hours and enjoy this chilled yet spicy Indian treat.
Here we have another Indian creation, the versatile jackfruit. Try cooking a chopped jackfruit for thirty minutes at low heat. Then, puree the fruit before mixing it with sugar, coconut milk, and double thick cream. Leave the mixture in the freezer overnight before indulging in this magnificent dessert with savory undertones.
Alright, it’s time to get weird! This ice cream flavor is quite difficult to track down, so you’d best make it yourself. This ice cream is perfect for those who love hot food but sadly can’t handle the heat (or its effects on the body). You’ll want to fry up a handful of diced jalapeños with some double thick cream, salt, and sugar in a saucepan, along with some vanilla pods, molasses, and honey. Strain out the mixture with a sieve, whisk in some cornstarch, cook in the added starch and then leave the final product in the freezer for a few hours.
This incredible flavor was given to us by our Swedish friends. Known as saltlakrits, this one has been described as an acquired taste, only for bizarro ice cream fans! Swedes love serving up a bowl of saltlakrits to foreigners just to watch their reaction. The unsuspecting victims are generally under the impression that they’re about to eat something sweet. Not so, as this flavor is as salty as a mineral lick! Just make sure that you use freshly ground salt and licorice for the recipe.
Goat Cheese, Cashew and Caramel
This odd combination was pioneered by Chicago ice cream aficionados who simply couldn’t settle for just caramel. Jessica Oloroso, the proprietor of Black Dog Chicago, loves nothing more than strolling through farmers’ markets, picking out various ingredients she thinks will go well in ice cream. Who would have thought that the powerful taste of goat cheese would pair so well with chewy caramel, all topped with cashew nuts?
Creamed Cod and Chips
If you for some reason ever wanted an ice cream version of the classic English meal, fish, and chips, look no further than Fredericks Dairies. The creative team there has a chilly version of the British staple, literally made from creamed cod and potato. The meal, at first glance, looks like an ordinary serving of fish and chips. We really would love to try this one, just because of its ingenious trickery!
