Ted was not the only one going through difficulties, however, as Mary was also trying to come to terms with her own personal challenges. The two then found a source of strength and support in their blossoming relationship. Mary had grown up in a sad and testing home, where father had fallen severely ill, his failing health being but one of the many struggles for one so young and alone.

In an honest and emotional 2018 interview with Country Living, Mary spoke about how her childhood had revolved around her father’s failing health. As a young girl, she had spent most of her time fixated on the moment that he would eventually die. This type of devastating childhood would lead to troubled adulthood and even motherhood, as Mary was struggling so much to come to terms with her father’s passing as she started her own family. Thanks to Ted, however, she was able to finally deal with much of this trauma.
